Packing List
With the help of onebag.com, and people who have done this kind of thing before, we’ve come up with a packing list for our three month trek. This is my list; Rachel’s obviously varies slightly, though not as much as you might think (she’s taking only three pairs of underwear, minimal makeup and no hairdryer!)
Are we missing anything?
Clothes
- 3 white short-sleeve t-shirts (undershirts)
- 2 long-sleeve base layer (synthetic, wicking)
- 1 long-sleeve white thermal shirt (cotton)
- 1 button-down semi-formal dress shirt
- 1 sweater
- 1 pair jeans (We’ve been advised numerous times not to do this. Jeans are heavy, take forever to dry, and don’t compress well. But I wear my jeans every day… they’re just kind of a part of me.)
- 1 pair Prana Zion yoga / climbing pants (light weight, water resistant, quick dry, but don’t scream “Workout Pants!!”)
- 1 pair sweat pants (Mostly for sleeping)
- 1 pair running shorts (doubles for swim suit)
- 1 pair long thermal underwear (synthetic, quick dry)
- Hiking boots
- Lightweight, thin sole, slip on shoes (doubles for running shoes)
- Patagonia Nano Puff and Torrent Shell (Best purchase of the trip. Perfect travel winter coat solution)
- Gloves
- Beanie
- 3 pairs socks (wicking)
Misc Gear
- REI Ridgeline 65 Backpack (bought for $80 on Craigslist)
- Patagonia Day-Bag (highly compresses able to store in large pack)
- Silk Sleep Sack (For not touching hostel sheets. Silk is more comfortable and more compressible than cotton. Thanks Ken.)
- Packing Cubes (for clothes)
- Small Mesh Bags (for toiletries, cables)
- Quick Dry Towel (convinced to ditch)
- Compass
- Bag Lock
- Braided Latex Clothes Line
- European Power Adapter
- Duct Tape (thanks MacGyver)
- Leg Money Belt (good for someone who wants the security of a money belt, but has self-respect) I dropped the condescension and went with the traditional money belt on advice from Ken Kaczmarek.
- Large Moleskine Plain Journal (adding to my collection)
- Pocket Moleskine Travel Journal (doubles as a wallet / thanks Brian!)
- 7 pilot G2 07 (the only pen with which I write)
- Passport
- Credit / Debit Card
- six 1-gallon ziplock bags (thanks Dave!)
- Five 16 oz Deli containers + lids
- 1 Matfer Dough Card (second most used tool in the kitchen next to my knife, which sadly, I’m not bringing)
- Bandana
- Flashlight
Electronics
- 13” MacBook Air + charger (I’ll be doing contract web work, so this is not optional)
- Cannon S95 Powershot (Thanks for the reco, Smith and Erik! And thank you Emilia, for dropping photographic knowledge on us.)
- 2 SDHD memory cards
- 2 Camera batteries + charger
- Gorillapod flexible tripod
- Iphone + charger (using as an iPod touch - we won’t be getting international mobile plans, but will instead purchase inexpensive prepaid phones when we get there.)
- Kindle + charger
- Headphones
- Compact Portable Speaker
- WD Passport 500 GB external drive ($47 on cyber monday - thanks Jon!)
Toiletries (stored in those mesh bags)
- Toothbrush
- Toothpaste
- Floss
- Body Wash (Acquire On Site)
- Shampoo (A.O.S.)
- Deodorant
- Nail clippers
- Razor + extra blades
- Shaving cream
- Toilet paper (just in case)
- Medications
- Bandaids
- Neosporin
- Ibuprofen
